Was “Civil War” A Good Idea?

Do you think the game would have been better off using an original story like MUA did? Or was Civil War a brilliant idea?

Personally, as much as I agree that this game’s story is far better than MUA’s, it is a game first and foremost and I do not think that the Civil War offered lots of creative potential.

Yes, MUA had a weak and messy story, but thanks to how it zigzagged through numerous parts of the Marvel Universe, it allowed us to us adventure in Atlantis, Murderworld, Mephisto’s Realm, Shi’ar and Skrull planets, Doom’s Castle, Asgard, and other creative settings.

Those settings are far more interesting and visually appealing than all the governmental, political settings of MUA2. They leave little to explore and significantly limit the creativity.

For example, noticed that most of the enemies we fight in MUA2 are gun-wielding soldiers/officers/guardsmen? How does that compare to MUA which features all types of creative foes such as Atlanteans, Demons, Clowns, Robots, Aliens, and Godly/Mystical beings?

So, for story’s sake, I think the Civil War was a smart decision. However, this is a game series first and foremost and too much creative potential was sacrificed to make it happen. So overall, I think it was a bad idea. Had they gone with a story that explored more interesting worlds and locations of the Marvel Universe, the game would have been more interesting.

I hope they do not repeat this. MUA3’s creativity, if it’s made, shouldn’t be restricted to a story that revolves around D.C. buildings, city streets, and tunnels. Yes, Latveria and Wakanda were quite interesting, but what about the other 90% of the game?

Civil War was fine. The cutting and bare use of it, was not.

Well, it being too short was disappointing and considering that 90% of the NYC levels took place underground unlike it did for XML2 that was disappointing also. The maps for both side of the CW were almost exactly the same instead of different. There were no maps in MUA1 that were identical except for the sim missions.

The game was somewhat an original idea. So many liberties were taken with the game that it created a whole new story within itself.

I really liked the office buildings etc. I know in MUA I hated Atlantis, Mephisto’s Realm, Murderworld and, ug, Asgard. I felt these settings were too far out of touch, like fairytales.

Haven’t we had this topic before?

I think that the Civil War was a good storyline to do for the game, but it should have been much longer, like 50% of the game. I’m not one who usually complains about the length of a game because if I like to play the game repeatedly, then I don’t care as much how long it is. However, I can finish this game in about 6 hours. That’s way too short.

I don’t care as much about the locations in this game. It was appropriate for the storyline. MUA was all over the place. It was like they just stuck things in for the heck of it. I wish there were more diverse enemies to fight in this one though. Some of the enemies in MUA were repeated at different levels. They just changed the names. But it still feels like there were more types that in this game.

I ya’ll are missing StormSnake’s point.  He’s not talking about the Civil War story but on the visual settings it imposes and this wouldn’t have changed regardless of much of the storyline they used.  Civil War centered around urban settings.  Sewers, streets, office buildings, warehouses.  All the enemies are monotonous soldiers.  It is JUST like 90% of the FPS games out there.  It’s a sea of gray.  It’s boring.

But that doesn’t necessarily mean that the only other option is to go the “fairy tale” root.  Wakanda is a good example of being visually stimulating while still being realistic with the bright greens of all the trees and shrubs, the blue of the water and the unusual architecture of buildings.  Japan is another good example because of the unique architecture and more use of vibrant colors like red and yellow.  If you went from Wakanda to Japan to the Baxter Building you’ll have three very different experiences and that it has nothing to do with outrageous sci-fi elements.  And each would offer different types of enemies.  Japan would have The Hand’s ninjas, Wakanda has it’s own army and the Baxter Building would probably be robots.  They have significantly different visuals and styles which add more to the experience.  It all adds up to make each location memorable and different from the next.

I very much agree that the game needed more variety.  Though some will complain that the game was too short, in some ways it seemed too long since I was just fighting the same guys in the same areas over and over again.  One of the things I liked about the first MUA was all of the different locations and enemy types.  As far as seeming like a fairy tale, the Marvel universe is a lot bigger than New York and Wakanda.  If Asgard is too bizarre, then Thor shouldn’t be in the game.  If the Shi’ar Empire is too out there, then Jean Grey has no right to be there with Phoenix powers.  It’s all part of the continuity.  We’re controlling the greatest and most powerful beings in the universe here so that we can - beat up soldiers?  Blow up robots?  I can do that stuff with Mario.  Give me some enemies worth fighting and some interesting places to fight them.  It’s nice to have an interesting story and all, but if the gameplay is repetitive it gets boring quickly.

I don’t have a problem with the games stages. They’re only similar in the fact that they’re mostly industrial areas (the first 2 chapters anyway). Each stage still has its own distinct aspects that make them all unique. For me, anyway, that’s perfectly fine.

But I don’t like Civil War, or any comic-based stories, just for the pure fact that I’m tired of seeing people complain about how “X character was in Civil War but isn’t in the game” or “X character wasn’t in Civil War, why are they in the game?”. I’d rather the game have its own story, that way they can put whoever they want in and not have to bother with who is or isn’t “supposed” to be in the story. Same with the issues of whether the game is too similar to the original story or not similar enough. Just make it a unique story and get all that out of the way, I say.

Civil War was a far too limiting choice for charcters, a game story with variety is much better, like in mua1 because its basically a tour of the marvel universe.

EXACTLY i mean i appreciate the the new characters that this game brought us.

But i still majorly missed the non-returning characters from MUA1.
